It is a confusing and uncertain time for many, and after today’s announcement by the Prime Minister the nation has been enlisted to stay indoors, only allowed out for essentials.  With the idea of staying in the house for the next 3 or even 12 weeks for some, this can be scary, lonely and even challenging at times.  As well as the prospect of working from home, possibly home-schooling, worrying about employment or chilling watching Netflix, you will want to spend some time exercising to maintain your physical and mental health.  We have come up with our top 10 tips to help you get started.  Try to stay positive and support each other.

 Top 10 Tips

1.     Switch off when working from home.  Be disciplined with your hours and don’t overdo it.  Move away from the laptop..

2.     Read that book you’ve been wanting to start for ages.  A small amount of escapism will help your mental health.

3.     Sleep well.  Life will be slower for the next few weeks, so enjoy the prospect of more sleep.

4.     Open the windows in the house to get some fresh air flowing.  As well as keeping the house fresh, it is important for your wellbeing.

5.     Cleaning, gardening, DIY... it all adds up, counting towards your physical activity requirements. Get that project done and feel good about it.

6.     Pause, Breathe.. and stretch. There is nothing more relaxing than some slow breathing, de-stressing and stretching your chest, shoulders, back and hips.  They hold stress but also sitting down more can cause tightness. Counterbalance that with deep inhalations, exhales and holding stretch positions.

7.     Use the garden to exercise.  Create a fun circuit to mix it up.

8.     If you are living with family, try exercise with them or connect with a friend over the phone – video call them and train together.  It will keep you going. Motivate each other.

9.     Follow us to get exercise ideas and tips whilst staying in the house.  Challenge your strength, flexibility, cardiovascular system and motor skills in new ways.

10.  Don’t watch the news too much.  Limit your access as this can cause unnecessary worry.  It’s not all true….

We will be sharing more exercise ideas, tips and clips over the next few weeks to help you further, but in the meantime be sure to follow @adlibtraining.  Feel free to ask us questions, all things health and fitness.  It can be hard to find the positives in all of this, but there are some… Stay at home, stay safe and take care x
