Well, what a summer we have had!

We have been spoilt with the amount of sport on our TVs this summer.  With the World Athletics, Women’s Euros, Tennis, Commonwealth and so much more... It has been fantastic and such a great time to feel inspired.

Children have seen some amazing wins which will go down in history.  Focus has already been put on Government to focus on participation and change for accessibility.

Role models have been formed and I feel change is on the way.  We are feeling positive.

In our house we are constantly asked to race with one of the kids shouting ‘ready, steady, go’ and their swimming has improved when playing ‘saying look mum I copy them on TV’.  It is so impactful, with both their physical and mental health.  To see the highs, lows, smiles, injury and astounding performances.  They see it all.  It has been a great way to talk to my toddler about why one athlete may be shouting or crying, as well as seeing the celebration.

You may not be training to be the next world champion, but seeing the amount of sport on TV, it can influence people’s ideas around physical activity.

As a nation, we need to move more

It is known when Wimbledon is on, tennis participation increases by an average of 30% each year! The issue is, keeping the momentum and creating lasting change.

As health professionals, could we be doing more to engage the inactive?

What has inspired you this summer?

What personal change have you made?

The Ad-Lib team share some of their highlights:

  • The ladies football. It united young, old, male and females. It felt like the start of something new for Women’s sport in general.  Here’s to the media broadcasting more of women’s sport.

  • The atmosphere at the Commonwealth games was amazing and we got to watch sports which are new to us.  It was also nice to see old age pensioners competing and winning!

  • The World Athletics competition saw some amazing performances on the track and field.  It is always great seeing the top athletes in the World compete against each other in one place.

Please share your thoughts below.  Maybe your favourite sporting highlights from this summer, or ideas you have to encourage yourself or others to get moving!

We train up health champions within communities to encourage others to make positive lifestyle habits.  If you want to know more, get in touch.

Let’s work together to make a difference.
