Why is Outdoor Fitness Essential? 

Summer is finally here so here are some tips on why al fresco exercise is good for you!

It boosts our mental health

We all know the mental health benefits of exercising – our body releases those feel-good chemicals called endorphins which elevate our mood.  Studies are showing that those who take part in outdoor physical activities and nature-based interventions experience less depression and anxiety.  Outdoor exercisers also have the added benefit of being in direct contact with sunlight increasing the levels of serotonin and vitamin D which have been shown to enhance mood (make sure you use your SPF!)

Exercising outside whether you are walking, running, using community outdoor gym equipment or gardening is free.  Even if you don’t have direct access to outdoor space in your own property, you shouldn’t have to travel far to find an open space to exercise.  It’s always open and doesn’t require a membership!

It could challenge your body more

The outdoors provides a constantly changing environment to exercise in.  Even slight changes in terrain including inclines, bumps, holes, winding paths and hilly roads can keep your body engaged and challenged by potentially increasing the difficulty of your training.  Benefits can also be gained by training with the challenges of varying temperatures and wind resistance.

It will boost your immune system 

Vitamin D has a huge role in supporting your body’s immune function as it helps to decrease inflammation and supports the white blood cells that help our body’s ability to fight off infection. 

By exercising outside you are increasing your exposure to the sun which is the most natural way for our bodies to produce vitamin D.
